Lumpsum formula

For yearly compounding (the usual mutual-fund comparison model): A = P × (1 + r)t. With n compounds a year: A = P × (1 + r/n)n×t, where P is the lumpsum, r the annual rate as a decimal, n the compounds per year and t the years. Gains = A − P. CAGR = (A ÷ P)1/t − 1.

Worked example (matches Groww)

₹15,00,000 invested as a lumpsum at 12% for 5 years with yearly compounding: A = 15,00,000 × (1.12)5 ≈ ₹26,43,513. Absolute return ≈ 76.23%; CAGR = 12%.

When lumpsum vs SIP

Use a lumpsum when you already have a large amount (bonus, maturity proceeds, inheritance) and can stay invested through volatility. Prefer a SIP when you invest from monthly income or want to average purchase cost over time. Many investors do both: a core SIP plus occasional lumpsums. Try the compare panel above, then refine SIP plans on the SIP Calculator or withdrawals on the SWP Calculator.

Inflation and real returns

A ₹26 lakh corpus in five years buys less than ₹26 lakh today. Divide by (1 + inflation)t for a rough real value. At 6% inflation, ₹26,43,513 in 5 years is about ₹19.75 lakh in today’s rupees. Real CAGR is lower than the nominal assumed return.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lumpsum future value formula?

With yearly compounding, A = P × (1 + r)^t. With n compounds a year: A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t).

SIP vs lumpsum — which is better?

Lumpsum can grow more if the full amount compounds from day one under a rising market. SIP reduces timing risk. Compare both with the same total invested on this page.

Does compounding frequency matter for mutual funds?

Fund NAVs move daily; yearly A = P(1+r)^t is the common comparison model. Try other frequencies here for sensitivity.

How is the rough equity MF tax estimate calculated?

LTCG 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh for holdings over a year; STCG 20% if under a year (post-Jul-2024 equity rules). Estimate only — not tax advice.

What does inflation-adjusted (real) future value mean?

Real FV = nominal FV ÷ (1 + inflation)^t — an estimate of today’s buying power.

Is this investment advice?
