How this PPF calculator works
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a 15-year government savings scheme with tax-free interest. Enter how much you put in each financial year, and the calculator shows your PPF maturity value, total investment, interest earned and a year-wise table. You can also add 5-year extensions, choose whether you keep depositing during them, and raise your deposit each year.
The maths follows the PPF Scheme, 2019 rules. Interest is worked out for every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, then added to your account once a year on 31 March. So a deposit made by 5 April earns interest for the whole year. A deposit made on 6 April misses April's interest.
Current PPF interest rate
The PPF rate is 7.1% a year, compounded yearly, for 1 October to 31 December 2026. The Finance Ministry's office memorandum of 30 September 2026 kept every small savings rate unchanged, and India Post's SB Order 12/2026 put it into effect. The rate is reviewed every quarter, so check it again before you invest.
Worked examples at 7.1%
| Deposit | Timing | Years | Invested | Maturity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,50,000 a year | By 5 April | 15 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹40,68,209 |
| ₹1,50,000 a year | By 5 April | 25 (15 + 10) | ₹37,50,000 | ₹1,03,08,015 |
| ₹12,500 a month | By the 5th | 15 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹39,44,599 |
₹40,68,209 is the maturity figure most banks and the India Post sample tables give for the maximum yearly deposit, and this calculator gives the same number. Depositing the whole year's amount in April earns more than spreading it across the year.
PPF rules worth knowing
- Deposit limits: at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 per financial year, in one go or in several deposits.
- Tax (EEE): under the old tax regime your deposits can be claimed as a deduction, within the ₹1.5 lakh limit. Interest and maturity are tax-free under both regimes.
- Extension: after 15 years you can extend in blocks of 5 years, with deposits (submit Form 4 within a year of maturity) or without them.
- Loan and withdrawal: loans are allowed from the 3rd to the 6th financial year, and partial withdrawals from the 7th.

Frequently asked questions
What is the PPF interest rate now?
7.1% a year, compounded yearly, for the October–December 2026 quarter. The Finance Ministry kept it unchanged in its 30 September 2026 review. The rate is reviewed every quarter.
How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF for 15 years?
About ₹40,68,209 at 7.1%, if you deposit ₹1,50,000 by 5 April every year. You invest ₹22,50,000 and earn ₹18,18,209 in tax-free interest.
How is PPF interest calculated?
Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month. It is added to the account once a year on 31 March, so it compounds yearly.
Is it better to deposit in PPF before the 5th?
Yes. A deposit made by the 5th earns interest for that month. Depositing the full year's amount by 5 April earns the most interest.
Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, as many times as you want. To keep depositing, submit Form 4 within one year of maturity. If you don't, the account carries on earning interest with no new deposits.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF is EEE: deposits qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime, within the ₹1.5 lakh limit. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes.
When can I withdraw money from PPF?
Partial withdrawals are allowed once a year from the 7th financial year. Loans are allowed from the 3rd to the 6th year. After 5 years, you can close early in special cases like serious illness or higher education, with a 1% interest cut.
