How this Sukanya Samriddhi calculator works
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), formally the Sukanya Samriddhi Account, is a government savings scheme for a girl child under 10. Enter what you deposit each financial year, when the account was opened and your daughter's birth month. The calculator shows the SSY maturity amount, the total you deposit, the interest earned, her age every year, and how much you could withdraw for her education at 18.
The maths follows paragraph 5 of the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019. Interest is worked out for each calendar month on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th and the end of the month. It is added to the account once a year, on 31 March, so it compounds yearly. Deposits are allowed for 15 years from opening, and the balance keeps earning interest until the account matures 21 years after opening.
Current Sukanya Samriddhi interest rate
The SSY rate is 8.2% a year, compounded yearly, for 1 October to 31 December 2026. The Finance Ministry's office memorandum of 30 September 2026 kept every small savings rate unchanged, and the rate has been 8.2% since 1 January 2024. It is reviewed every quarter and a new rate applies to the whole balance, so the rate box is editable.
Worked examples at 8.2% (account opened in April)
| Deposit | Timing | Deposited | Maturity after 21 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,50,000 a year | By 5 April | ₹22,50,000 | ₹71,82,119 |
| ₹12,500 a month | By the 5th | ₹22,50,000 | ₹69,32,648 |
| ₹1,50,000 a year | In March | ₹22,50,000 | ₹66,37,818 |
| ₹3,000 a month | By the 5th | ₹5,40,000 | ₹16,63,835 |
| ₹1,000 a month | By the 5th | ₹1,80,000 | ₹5,54,612 |
₹71,82,119 is the same figure SBI's own SSA calculator gives for the maximum deposit. Paying the whole year's amount by 5 April is worth about ₹5.4 lakh more than paying it at the end of March, because each deposit earns for a full extra year.
Why opening month matters: the 16th deposit
The 15 deposit years are counted from the date you open the account, not by financial year. Open in April and you make 15 yearly deposits. Open in any other month and the 15 years spread over 16 financial years, so you can make one more deposit. The calculator shows this as "Yearly deposits: 16" and lists the last year you can pay in.
Sukanya Samriddhi rules worth knowing
- Who can open: a parent or legal guardian, for a girl under 10. One account per girl, and up to two girls per family (three if twins or triplets are born).
- Deposit limits: at least ₹250 and at most ₹1,50,000 per financial year, in multiples of ₹50. A missed year can be revived with a ₹50 penalty per year plus the missed minimum.
- Tax (EEE): under the old tax regime, deposits count towards the ₹1.5 lakh deduction (Section 80C, now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025). Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes.
- Education withdrawal: once she turns 18 or passes Class 10, you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year, in one go or in up to five yearly instalments.
- Early closure: allowed for her marriage after 18, or after 5 years on compassionate grounds such as a serious illness or the guardian's death.

How much will I get if I deposit ₹1.5 lakh a year in Sukanya Samriddhi?
About ₹71,82,119 at 8.2% if you deposit ₹1,50,000 by 5 April every year for 15 years. You deposit ₹22,50,000 and earn ₹49,32,119 in tax-free interest, paid 21 years after opening.
How much is ₹1,000 a month in SSY after 21 years?
About ₹5,54,612 at 8.2%, if you pay ₹1,000 by the 5th of every month for 15 years. You deposit ₹1,80,000 in total.
How is Sukanya Samriddhi interest calculated?
Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th and the end of the month, and added to the account on 31 March each year. So deposits made by the 5th earn interest for that month.
For how many years do I have to deposit in SSY?
For 15 years from the date of opening. The account then keeps earning interest with no deposits until it matures 21 years after opening. If you open in a month other than April, the 15 years cover 16 financial years, so you can make 16 yearly deposits.
Can I withdraw from Sukanya Samriddhi for my daughter's education?
Yes. After she turns 18 or passes Class 10, you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year, as a lump sum or in up to five yearly instalments.
Is Sukanya Samriddhi interest taxable?
No. SSY is EEE: deposits qualify for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes.
What happens if I miss an SSY deposit?
The account becomes inactive for that year but keeps earning interest. You can revive it before 15 years by paying the minimum ₹250 for each missed year plus a ₹50 penalty per year.
