XIRR (extended internal rate of return) is the single yearly rate that makes all your dated cash flows balance out: every investment, withdrawal and today's value. Because it uses the exact date of each amount, it is the right return figure for SIPs, step-ups, missed instalments, extra lumpsums and partial redemptions, where a simple CAGR would mislead. Mutual fund statements and investment apps in India usually show your SIP return as XIRR.
XIRR is the rate r that solves Σ Ci ÷ (1 + r)(di − d0) / 365 = 0, where Ci is each cash flow (investments negative, money received positive), di its date and d0 the first date. There is no closed-form answer, so the calculator uses Newton's method with a bisection fallback, the same 365-day convention as Excel and Google Sheets. With Microsoft's own sample (−10,000 on 1 Jan 2008, then 2,750, 4,250, 3,250 and 2,750) it returns 37.34%, matching Excel's =XIRR().
| Measure | Uses dates of each flow? | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute return | No, ignores time | Quick total gain, or holdings under a year |
| CAGR | Only start and end | One lumpsum held the whole period (CAGR Calculator) |
| XIRR | Yes, every flow | SIPs, top-ups, withdrawals, any irregular investing |
The benchmark card replays your exact cash flows at a fixed rate you choose, such as an FD or an index fund's long-run return, and shows what they would be worth on the valuation date. If your current value is higher, your investment beat that alternative for your actual timing. The real XIRR line removes inflation to show growth in buying power.
Switch to Regular SIP, enter the monthly amount and first instalment date, then add the current value from your app or statement and the valuation date. If you skipped or added instalments, copy the SIP into the custom table and edit those rows.
In Excel, investments are negative and money you receive is positive. In this tool you just pick Invest or Withdraw for each row; when pasting, use negative numbers for investments or write "invest 5000".
For periods under a year, XIRR annualises a small gain into a big yearly number. A wrong date, a missing instalment or the current value entered as an investment also distorts it. Check the cash flow table, which lists every amount and its date.
There is no single good number. Compare your XIRR with an alternative you could have chosen over the same dates, such as an FD rate or the fund's benchmark index, and with inflation. The benchmark field does that comparison for your exact cash flows.
Yes. Enter every investment and withdrawal across the funds, and use their combined current value. That gives your portfolio-level XIRR.
No. All parsing and maths run in your browser; nothing you type or import is sent to a server.
